The development of oxidation methods for water and air purification as well as for medical an cosmetic applications is a key competence of the GMBU Jena.

Our experiences and skills lie in the following fields:

  • Immobilisation of photocatalysts and photosensitizers in extrudates and thin films
  • UV oxidation, photocatalytic and electrochemical methods for decontamination and disinfection of water and air
  • Photocatalysts and photosensitizers in cosmetic and medical formulations
  • Novel purification and disinfection methods based on thermally activated pyroelectric nanomaterials (pyroelectrocatalysis)
Application example: Growht inhibition of cyanobacteria in aquatic systems

Photocatalytically active titaniumdioxide can be used in order to prevent algal bloom in freshwater environments. Therefore titaniumdioxide based nanomaterials which show improved photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation have been developed and immobilized in macroscopic extrudates. Thus prepared photocatalysts can be applied locally or in a bypass photoreactor system. When irradiated with solar or artificial visible light they can both prevent growth of cyanobacteria by inhibition or cell wall destruction and degrade harmful algal toxins.
